Photo provided by Debby Rabold , Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from a family collection.Midland Pennsylvania Railroad (1) A 1911 photograph of roadbed grading for the Midland Pennsylvania Railroad, which was to operate through the Lykens Valley from Millersburg and Killinger to Berrysburg and Gratz in Dauphin County, to Sacramento, Valley View, and Hegins in Schuylkill County, to a terminus in Ashland, Schuylkill County.In 1893, the Lykens Valley No. 2 slope was sunk 1,221 feet and in 1897 a tunnel was driven 915 feet connecting the No. 1 and No. 2 vein slopes. In 1898, new and powerful hoisting engines were erected at the No. 1 vein slope and in 1899 the sinking of the water hoist shaft was started and completed October 13, 1900 at a depth of 907 feet.
