You dont have to pay for a dedicated server and you can host your own server but you just need a good amount of RAM, 32 is suggested if using mods.
Hello, my friend and I typically stick together but can sometimes find the tether distance to be restrictive. All you really need to do is look around in the General Settings menu of the game when you are hosting a non-dedicated session. It was getting very low FPS though. So I changed it back and the FPS went from a terrible 5 - 20 to pretty consistent 40. So for those that tried this to fix the crashes, you might want to try going back to DX12, it is now not crashing (that I saw in a 5 minute test) and works much better. #3.

More than likely ASA takes more resources than the old version. Get a super computer and you can then max out the tether distance, or just run a dedicated server as the game is designed to be run and it will work for you. There are like 100 bugs and crashes right now.
