It took me 1.5 months as well, mostly searching sheds, garages, and two warehouses for a sledgehammer. Finally found one on my third warehouse. I play 100% vanilla, and their spawn rate seems to be down on 41.55. Then barricade it. then attack it with a saucepan. saucepan does little damage, but the whacks add exp to maintenance. Also, doing this allows you to build the wall frame where it is safe. lvling maintenance in the wild can be dangerous because of the sound.
