Disconnect the rectifier from the bike. If I remember correctly there are 5 wires in the plug to the rectifier... 3 white, 1 red, and 1 black. Measure the resistance between all combinations of the white wires. They should all measure about the same, and somewhere near .1 ohms.

Evidently I was shifting at way too high rpm even tho the motor was not sounding like it. I read in owners manual the shifting speeds: Gear speed/ mph. 1st 0 - 12.

Again with starter cable removed: 1. On fuel pump side of the harness still plugged in, push red meter probe into connector to touch pin with black/yellow wire, black meter lead to touch green pin. 2. Key on, push starter button, should get 12v. and pump should run. Like.

Normally, you can start in gear if the clutch is pulled in. There is a switch on the clutch handle that looks after this. Could be out of adjustment, dirty, no good, etc. Give it a looksee.
