As far as I can tell, you have to plant them yourself. They will harvest the fruit, once the trees mature. Yes, Philtre is right. Only you can plant the saplings. (No need for fertiliser). Once they are grown your NPCs can harvest fruits from them each year. The harvest will be larger when the trees get older.
