I have an M1A with an old 1967 NM standard weight barrel that shoots as good as my heavy match barrels, at least up to the first 20 or 30 rds. I would do things like a trigger job ($50) and utilize the gas cylinder first, and not mess with the barrel in a standard M1A until other accuracy enhancements were done. Again, ammo makes a huge difference.
The markings on the M1 and M14 knobs are within 1 click of eachother out to the "8" (and I didn't bother checking past that). The M14 has longer sight radius and thus the "5" (either knob) lines up closer to 500m (and conversely if you put it on the M1 it will line up closer to 500yds).
