As for windows and doors you can get 80 hp worth of barricade if you put 4 planks on either side of the window or 200 hp if you use metal sheets. These are not affected by your skill level. I think you are right. If you put the barricades outside it is also my observation that they tried to break in. Another advantage of having them inside is that you can hear the loud event first, which is the window breaking. Then you will have more time to react to the situation.

Edit: Decided to test it again because I started to wonder if it didn't work because I didn't break the window first. With a broken window and only one barricade I was able to shoot through it, but not when I added an extra plank. It's odd and misleading, because with 2 planks you can still see through the barricade, but not shoot through it.

You'll probably just need a lot of planks since each square of window takes 4 and there's usually a bunch in a row. There are some hammers that works only as weapon, maybe that's the problem. Nails and planks are needed.
