Hype is neccessary for f7 sadly. Mage barely even works well in f6 at low cata. If you really want to ram your way in with whatever setup you have now, I wouldn't recommend it, but you do you. (source - my first 100 runs were as Yeti mage, and it was the most painful, usess time i've ever spent.) ...
Btw, mage is really bad f3-f7. In f7, mages are only good if you have a Hyperion and 3/4 storm/full storm + Legendary Sheep. But yes, I would get blue whale for tankiness, get a good sword for healing. But I don't recommend mage for f4-f7. I do have experience so don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
